Innovation Lab & Micro Accelerator

Advanced Innovation and Design Program that enables educational institutions and innovators to co-create technology with customers and develop job skills aligned to the 4th industrial revolution (Jobs 4.0)  
  • Smart City approach requires a combination of smart efforts to improve inhabitants’ quality of life, promote economic growth, and protect the environment from degradation.
  • Key systems of smart and sustainable cities include: smart energy, smart buildings, smart transportation, smart water, smart waste, smart physical safety and security, smart health care, and smart education.
  • ICT based concepts such as big data, open data, Internet of Things (IoT), data accessibility and management, data security, mobile broadband, ubiquitous sensor networks are essential in smart and sustainable cities and are predicated on an ICT infrastructure to improve Quality of Life ( QOL) and promote overall sustainability.
  • UC Berkeley, in alliance with FICE, is launching its Micro Accelerator program in India that will co-create smart city solutions and technology business models with the citizens of the city. The lab will be established within institutions around India. Preference will be given to college that have existing labs from FICE.
  • Innovators will be taken through a UC Berkeley lean start up process and will develop job skills aligned with the 4th industrial revolution (Jobs 4.0)

UC Berkeley-FICE Innovation Lab & Micro Accelerator Program in India will build a culture of co-innovation and accelerate Innovation Lab solutions to market. It is a unique opportunity for corporations and innovators to create a huge impact on the lives of people in partnership with one of the top global universities.

Innovation Lab & Micro Accelerator will:

  • Work on curated research areas and challenges, derived through engagement with diverse stakeholders including citizens, industry, academia and the local administration
  • Leverage cutting edge research assets and technologies from industry
  • Launch pilots and use cases development that can help participants evolve as innovators, career researchers, entrepreneurs or corporate leaders aligned with Jobs 4.0 ( Jobs and skills for the 4th industrial revolutions)
  • Conduct a Smart City boot camp and lean startup curriculum within the premises of participating colleges that will lead to the UC Berkeley Global Accelerator that will be conducted in Bangalore, India.

Bridging Skill And Process Gaps For Transformative Change

This program combines key industry skills with pre-accelerator processes that help participants co-create technology and business model innovations for present and future customers.

The Innovation Lab & Micro Accelerator Benefits

  • Participants will develop Jobs 4.0 skills like empathy, co-creation, customer development and business model innovation.
  • Scout for technologies, innovations, start-ups solving some of the pressing challenges to develop a smart city.
  • Selected technologies and innovators will undergo a FICE-UC Berkeley co-innovation process and an accelerator.
  • Tangible Outcome: At the end of the program participants will come up with actual solutions, and in some cases will also develop a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) that can be launched in the market faster.

    Andre Marquis is the Executive Director of the Lester Center for Entrepreneurship at UC Berkeley as well as the Manager of the US National Science Foundation Innovation Corps San Francisco Bay Area Node. He is a serial entrepreneur with a long record of starting successful biotechnology and information technology ventures. Some of his notable startups include Amplyx Pharmaceuticals, Chorus at Eli Lilly (www.choruspharma.com), Internet Pictures Corp [NASDAQ: IPIX], Accept.com (acquired by amazon.com) and CyberGold [NASDAQ: CGLD]. Mr. Marquis was also a member of Boston-based CommonAngels and a founder of Incubator, LLC, a Berkeley-based business incubator. He holds an MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and has received the Richard H. Holton Teaching Fellow award.

    Mark Searle is an award-winning international serial entrepreneur and instructor. He is Senior Fellow for Global Programs UC Berkeley’s Lester Center for Entrepreneurship, and brings 20 years of experience as co-founder, CEO and COO of a number of early-stage and growth-stage technology startup companies. He has served as Founder and CEO of SenSage [acquired by NASDAQ: KEYW] and LogSavvy, CEO of Barcelona-based Kinamik Data Integrity, and as COO at Plynetics Corp., Cybergold [NASDAQ: CGLD] and Internet Pictures Corp. [NASDAQ: IPIX]. Companies under Mark’s leadership have won numerous awards including: “Top European ICT Startup” (Eurecan); “Innovate 100” most innovative startups, “Red Herring 100,” “Always On Global 250,” and others. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, an AB cum laude from Princeton University and was a Distinguished Graduate Student Instructor at UC Berkeley.

    Elizabeth Saunders is the Chief of Staff and Program Director for the Innovation Acceleration Group at UC Berkeley Executive Education. After serving five years as a cryptologic technician in the U.S. Navy, Elizabeth held a number of jobs across diverse industries in international settings, including managing a consumer-facing business in Central America, working with the U.N.'s grassroots initiative to fight human trafficking in London and around the world, and managing US programs for an India-based immersive business education venture. She was also Program Manager at startup-focused technology engine YouNoodle. She works with the IAG team to enable entrepreneurs and corporate innovators to learn and apply Lean methodologies to their innovative ideas.

    Manav Subodh is Director of International Development for Innovation Acceleration Group ( IAG) and UC Berkeley Executive Education. Previously, Manav worked for Intel corporation and led Intel’s entrepreneurship initiatives in over 30 countries including the Intel's global accelerator on Wearable computing. Manav has also worked for Ernst and Young (EY), Hughes and QAI. In addition to his roles at IAG and UC Berkeley Executive Education, Manav is a Co-Founder of 1M1B (1 Million for 1 Billion), a global initiative to enable a million leaders and entrepreneurs to impact a billion people and drive them out of poverty. Manav and his work has been featured in Forbes, Yahoo and TEDx. Presently, he is prototyping a Smart Village accelerator in 4 states of India with focus on creating jobs, enhancing income and providing last mile as a service to startups.
